Family History: Southern Biographies & Genealogies
1500s to 1940s
Research a broad range of family history records for your Southern ancestors, from both public and private records. You can discover narrative lineage records extending from a family's earliest know immigrant ancestor and spanning several generations.
Produced in collaboration with the Harold B. Lee Library at Brigham Young University, this data set contains the electronically searchable text of the pages of twelve books detailing the origin and descent of various prominent southern families.
In all, the books reference more than 165,000 individuals. Many of these volumes were previously published in very small quantities and for limited distribution and were difficult to locate. They include narrative lineage records extending from a family's earliest-known immigrant ancestor and spanning several generations, providing information from both public record and private correspondence.
Since the information contained within these family histories is narrative, you can often gain quite a complete understanding of your ancestors' lives and the times in which they lived. You can search on any type of identifying information in this data set, from names and dates to locations and keywords.
