This Family Archive, a 2-CD set, contains more than 60 million names of deceased individuals who appear in the Social Security Death Benefit Records Collection at the Social Security Administration. Generally this includes names of deceased Social Security recipients whose relatives applied for Social Security Death Benefits after their passing. Included in the 60 million names are approximately 400,000 railroad retirement records from the early 1900s to 1950s. 

This index is one of the most powerful research tools available for verifying deaths and death locations. It provides potential locations for searching for obituaries, wills, burials, other relatives, and similar information. It is also a good source for finding birth information, because it contains tens of millions of references to complete birth dates, many of which pre-date the time when births were officially registered in the various U.S. states and counties. Social Security numbers combined with birth dates also provide potential clues to a family's residence at a given time, which may help you locate other types of records. Using the information on this Family Archive, you may ask the Social Security Administration to search their records for an individual's original application for a Social Security card.
