Item Description

1860 Mortality Schedule

Williams county, Ohio

What is a mortality schedule?  The mortality schedules were taken along with the federal censuses every ten years.  They record the deaths of individuals who died during the twelve months before the census year (in this case, 1860).

These listings are packed with information, including:

  • age
  • gender
  • race
  • marital status
  • place of birth
  • month and year of death
  • occupation
  • cause of death
  • number of days the person was ill
  • occasionally the census taker will give more information about the cause of death in space provided at the bottom of each page.

These records are especially useful because they were collected prior to the creation of statewide vital statistics.  These records may be the best (if not only) way to determine when and how your ancestor died.  The information given here can be a starting point for you to gather other documentation of your ancestor.  For example, with the county and date of death known, it may be possible to find a newspaper record of the death, giving you more information about his/her family.  You could use the county and date of death to gather information from their will and estate through the county's probate court.  These records are also useful to get a glimpse of your ancestor's way of life in their county of residence.  It is also possible to track certain diseases that ran through towns during that year.

This census is seven pages long.

I have a lot of other Ohio history and genealogy resources available for every county in Ohio, and lots of other states too.  Check out my ebay store for a list of what is available.

This CD is both Mac and PC compatible.

Sorry, but I cannot honor requests to do lookups

This CD is not returnable unless it does not work.
