It was made by the National Casket Co. and patented in 1895. I am not for sure what year this particular table was made, there are 3 dates on it and they are all in the year 1895, so I think that is when it was made. It is a cooling table for the dead. There are holes in the top surface to let the air flow around the body to cool it down and the holes form words and it says, "The National Patent Applied for Special Veneer Top and Brass Trimmings." The table folds in half and the legs fold in and there is a handle on one side for the coroner to be able to carry it from place to place on horse back. It is 72 inches long and 18 inches wide and 21 1/2 inches tall when standing. When it is folded up it is 36 inches long 18 inches wide and 6 inches deep. The end where the head goes lifts up and there is a box underneath it for the coroner to put his tools. Inside that box now there is a thick wire piece that was used to hold down the head. There are also metal supports that pull out of each end for extra support. This piece is very rare, and is in great condition, especially for something this old. Good Luck!! | | |
